My Hand Piecing Method

2/20/2013

These videos were made to demonstrate my method of hand piecing.  There are a variety of methods and tools used by hand piecers.  After experimenting with various techniques, I have found what works well for me.  If it can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to imitate my techniques and make them your own.

NOTE:  To view the videos in full screen use the button in the bottom right side of the video screen.
I decided to create a second video (part 2) to complete the Hexagon design and to provide further information on hand piecing.  I hope you will enjoy both videos.  Let me know what you think, or if you have questions.  Happy stitching!

Wonderful! I like the idea of using the thimble on the ring finger..seems like I am so fumble fingers sometimes with it on my usual middle finger. I am going to try using a thimble on my ring finger and just see if it works for me. My biggest problem is that all my size small thimbles fit on my middle finger, but are really loose on my ring finger. Thanks so much for the ideas and tips to try! I am working on putting together my Dear Jane blocks..have been hand piecing with Linda Franz freezer paper method since 2004. I love Inklingo too.

Thank you for your comments. Although I also have a thimble for my middle finger, I have more success piecing with the ring finger because I use the middle finger to help control the fabric, but you can use the middle one if it works for you. No right or wrong way, just sharing ideas so we can all come up with whatever works for us. That is what is so wonderful about quilting - so may ways to do the same thing. :o)

To see if you like using that finger, you might wrap the finger with many layers of tape, then try it. I like to use that stretchy tape they wrap around the arm when you give blood. It sticks to itself and after wrapping several times, a needle won't go through it. If you decide to look into thimbles, take note of my blog subject "Thimbles."

Congrats on your work with the Dear Jane blocks -- hand piecing by freezer paper -- just another fun way to do things! One day I need to get back to my Farmer's Daughter blocks - I have over 40 done, but took a break from it.

Thank you so much for posting this. I am new to hand sewing and inset seams. These videos are the clearest I have seen for explaining the process. It will help immensely. Plus your technique gives me lots to think about. I have always wanted to make a grandmothers flower garden but have been hesitant due to my lack of experience. This makes it all seem much more doable. Thank you!

Thanks Glenda. I know you did these videos a long time ago, but this is very good. I learned much! I didn’t know there was open end thimbles.

I am a long-time quilting enthusiast, making my first quilt in 1985.  I grew up sewing, thanks to an amazing seamstress mother.  I learned to make my own clothes at an early age, eventually making  clothes for my family.

I do love to create beautiful quilts.  You are welcome to join me as I share my quilting experiences.
