Thimbles for Hand Piecing

2/22/2013

Today I want to talk about thimbles for hand piecing.  (Not what I would use for quilting.)

You may use any thimble you are comfortable with, but I offer the following information to support my hand piecing method.  Please use whatever works for you.

My favorite thimbles for hand piecing are the open ended or banded thimbles, because I hand piece by pushing the needle with the side of my finger, rather than the end.  This is important to me since I have nails and do not like closed ended thimbles, plus I need a thimble that has the groves/dimples on the sides.

Following are some thimbles I have found will work on the side of my finger.

Open-ended Tailor’s Thimbles are my favorite.  The best ones have deeper dents to catch the end of the needle very well.  Several years ago I purchased a package that contained 3 sizes (large size #1, medium size #3, small size #5).  I use the smallest one on my ring finger for hand sewing, though I could probably sew with the middle finger also.  The largest one would probably work on my thumb for hand quilting.  I keep them on a binder ring so I don’t lose them.

You may, of course, choose to use a regular closed-end thimble.  If you do, make sure it has a good amount of dimples on the sides, like this one from https://www.lacis.com/catalog/data/AD_Thimbles.html

My Hand Piecing Method

These videos were made to demonstrate my method of hand piecing.  There are a variety of methods and tools used by hand piecers.  After experimenting with various techniques, I have found what works well for me.  If it can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to imitate my techniques and make them your own.

NOTE:  To view the videos in full screen use the button in the bottom right side of the video screen.
I decided to create a second video (part 2) to complete the Hexagon design and to provide further information on hand piecing.  I hope you will enjoy both videos.  Let me know what you think, or if you have questions.  Happy stitching!

This is a good video to learn how easy it is to cut curved pieces for Inklingo shapes - such as the shapes in the current Inklingo Mystery Project I wrote about on 2/13/13.

I began a wonderful Inklingo project called Patchwork of the Crosses (POTC).  It is really such fun to make these "oh so interesting" blocks.  They are all great  - each different from the ones before.  Shown below are the POTC blocks I have completed.  To view the blocks you may choose to play the slideshow or simply select each one separately.

Go to Inklingo to see the POTC design set, plus many more.

Inklingo is having a Mystery Quilt-along to introduce its newest design, “New York Wheel.”  It should be fun and very informative.  If you have been wanting to try Inklingo, this is a good time.  Linda Franz is leading us through it step-by-step choosing our fabrics, what pieces to print first, how to print them, etc.  We will learn a LOT from this small quilt, and it won’t take as long as a large project.  I hope you will give it a try, but be aware that these are 6" blocks containing some small 1" pieces.

You can find the New York Wheel at Inklingo where it is currently on sale at the introductory price.

See the clues for the Case of the Secret Garden (COTSG) on the All About Inklingo blog starting February 4, 2013.   Let the sleuthing begin!

Visit Inklingo to see all the wonderful designs.

A Day of Inklingo

What a great day for sewing!  Many of you know that I teach a variety of quilting classes, specializing in High-tech and Low-tech processes.  I currently teach at Paramount Sewing in Eugene, Oregon.  It is a great store with a wonderful staff.  Karen, the owner, is one amazing lady!

My experience with Paramount began in 2005 when my husband and I moved to Eugene.  Since that time, I have enjoyed teaching hand applique (low-tech) and FMQ-Free Motion Quilting (high-tech), with an occasional miscellaneous quilting class.

I have several Applique groups that meet on a monthly basis - Groups A and B.  The "A" Group became a club in 2012 because we all just enjoy meeting for a great day of hand sewing.

Today's meeting involved a presentation of several computer related sewing media.  I presented information about Inklingo and EQ.  Inklingo is a great concept, for both hand and machine sewing.  In short, it is a program for printing quilt patterns directly on to your fabrics.  You really must go to Inklingo to check it out.  The picture here is a single block I hand pieced using the Inkingo Rose Star design.  So accurate!

There are many videos on the Inklingo site.  Click the Inklingo button on the right side on this screen to visit Inklingo to see what it is all about.  Such fun!

I am a long-time quilting enthusiast, making my first quilt in 1985.  I grew up sewing, thanks to an amazing seamstress mother.  I learned to make my own clothes at an early age, eventually making  clothes for my family.

I do love to create beautiful quilts.  You are welcome to join me as I share my quilting experiences.
